The Fugard Theatre’s original production of Kinky Boots is a heart-warming experience. Carol Kohne, Ellerman House’s Business Manager, recently went to find out why the South African premiere of this international smash-hit is a must-see for all musical theatre fans.
From the uplifting musical of an unlikely (and yet true) tale of how a drag queen helps rescue a shoe factory from bankruptcy, to the cosy intimacy of the small theatre and the special reconnection with some old friends before the show at the Fugard’s buzzing bar, it was a wonderful evening of all-round feel-good vibes.
“Kinky Boots has it all – a beautiful story of hope, inspiration and friendship, combined with fabulous music, glittering costumes, breathtaking choreography and plenty of heart,” says Daniel Galloway, Managing Director of the Fugard Theatre.
It’s so good in fact that the show has been extended yet again, now running until 2 February 2020 at the Fugard. Named after Athol Fugard, South Africa’s greatest living playwright, the 320-seater theatre is located in Cape Town’s District Six, a vibrant flourishing area deeply rooted in culture and history, with the renovated Congregational Church Hall as its grand entrance in Caledon Street.
Insiders Tip: Arrive early for a drink at the Fugard Theatre’s rooftop bar to take in some of the city’s most beautiful views before the show.
