Tired of seeing the same old ‘Top 10’ list of restaurants? Need a little something more than a perfectly set panna cotta or seared tuna done, just right? Want to know where the locals are dining? Here’s a list of our favourite ‘off the wall’ restaurants.
Only open select days a week and no reservations allowed – you feel like you have won the lottery if you manage to grab a spot in this brilliant little restaurant. Located in a vibrant hub in Kloof Nek Road, there is plenty to keep you busy while you wait for a spot to open. You must try the lobster roll – it will knock your socks off. Oh yes, be sure to check out their website – it’s worth a visit: Hallelujah
HOUSE OF H
Atmosphere galore is what you will find at House of H. This gem is the home of the best grill (and griller) in Cape Town (dare we say, the country?). No frills, no fuss just good vibes are the name of the game and the low-fi 90’s hip hop playlist will leave you wanting to stay well after your meal is done. Be sure to give H (Heinrich – the man behind it all) a high five on your way in – he’s always there making sure the ship steers in the right direction. Note, there aren’t any waiters, but rather a clever self-serve system that works like a charm.
If we had to describe Downtown Ramen in three words: Hidden, delicious, hidden (just to be clear – you need to work a bit to find this one). Don’t judge this book by its cover or its entrance. The restaurant is accessed by walking through Lefty’s Dive Bar (famous for their fried chicken and waffles). A small door at the back of Lefty’s will lead you to an ominous staircase. Follow the staircase to a tiny room and surrender to the experience. The most delicious bao buns with a range of fillings as well as their signature ramen noodle bowls, exploding with flavour.
The longest standing establishment on our list remains a firm favorite of ours. This Mexican restaurant rallies against the watered down tex-mex movement. Authentic Mexican cuisine brought to you by passionate owners that regularly travel to Mexico and bring home true Mexican flavours. The menu is tweaked constantly, keeping the offering fresh and relative. If brave enough, enquire about their top shelf tequila’s. Not the kind you knock back, but rather sip on and appreciate the complex flavours.
