Our guests often ask us which wine farms in Constantia we would recommend for day tours so we decided to share our list of favourites. Ellerman House has a range of wine experiences where guests can enjoy the best that South Africa has to offer in terms of wine, cuisine and location. We have listed below a few of the most popular farms in Constantia and will follow with our favourite farms in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek soon.

Eagle’s Nest: The origin of Eagle’s Nest can be traced back to 1836 when it was used as a stop between the area now known as Wynberg in the east, and the harbour of Hout Bay in the west. The farm specialises in red wines including Shiraz, Merlot and Viognier after extensive research was done to better understand the terroir and climate of the area.

Constantia Glen: Cradled between the slopes of Constantiaberg and False Bay, Constantia Glen is 60 hectares of magnificent views of the ocean. Wine and cheese tastings can be enjoyed while taking in the breathtaking view of the surroundings.

Buitenverwachting: A beautiful farm on the east facing slopes of Constantiaberg and barely 12km from False Bay. The farm originally formed part of the Constantia Estate, which was founded by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the new Dutch colony at the tip of Africa.

Klein Constantia: Dating back to 1685, Klein Constantia has been described as one of the world’s most beautiful wine farms. Set between ancient trees on the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg with breathtaking views of False Bay. The farm produces some of South Africa’s top wines, including one of the world’s best natural sweet wine, Vin de Constance.

Steenberg: The oldest registered farm in the Cape, Steenberg Vineyards produce a range of much-loved wine through a process of environmentally considerate and delicate winemaking. From vine to bottle, Steenberg’s wines are primed to produce an experience that evokes the unique terroir of the estate. Steenberg Vineyards produces a variety of wines, including Méthode Cap Classique, Sauvignon Blanc, Semmilon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz.

Beau Constantia: Beau Constantia is a boutique wine farm owned by the Du Preez family. The farm is situated on the north-facing slope of Constantia Nek, an elevated position overlooking False Bay to the east, where vineyards are exposed to the cool ocean-chilled winds. Wine vineyards stretching to 350m above sea level on the Constantiaberg mountain range, this spectacular site produces small quantities of phenomenal grapes with cropping levels ranging from 3 – 6 tons per hectare.
