Your itinerary is jam-packed with activities, but you heard the Ellerman House Contemporary Gallery is a must-see. Well, you’re right – here’s our guide to which artworks you should look for if you only have 15min to spare.
HIER – ANGUS TAYLOR
You can find many examples of Angus Taylor’s powerful work throughout the property, but HIER (Afrikaans for ‘Here’) is a fantastic example of how his work can enhance a space without overpowering it. Standing at the entrance of the gallery, ‘Hier’ sets the tone beautifully for what awaits you inside.
GALLERY GATE / SCREEN – STRIJDOM VAN DER MERWE
The perfect example of functional art. Impossible to avoid. Enter through the purpose-built gallery gate and admire the sharp angles used to welcome visitors to the gallery.
BEFORE LIFE – ARAMINTA DE CLERMONT
This striking collection of photos tells a touching story about students from the Cape Flats region in Cape Town. In stark contrast to their harsh neighborhoods, these youngsters celebrate the end their school careers with high hopes of a bright future.
WHAT WILL COME – WILLIAM KENTRIDGE
An interactive artwork that demands the viewer to participate before all is revealed. Stand at the correct distance from the work to watch the desolate landscape come to life.
MY GALLERIST MADE ME DO IT – ED YOUNG
An observation piece highlighting the often-tumultuous relationship between artist and gallery owner. One of our cheekiest works – excuse the pun.
Use your last remaining minutes to start thinking of an excuse for your next appointment, because you won’t be able to tear yourself away.
