Ellerman House showcases one of the most important private art collections in South Africa. The works depict the settlement and progress of Cape Town from the 1800s to the present day. The collection has expanded to contemporary pieces, which can be seen in the Ellerman House Contemporary Art Gallery.

The owner of Ellerman House, Paul Harris, has always had a passion for art and it can be seen in his collection of the old masters and the support he shows for up-and-coming young artists in South Africa. The entire collection consists of South African art over the last two centuries and can be seen in every room on the Relais & Chateaux property. Ellerman House has created two unique experiences where guests can explore the very best that South Africa has to offer those who are interested in art.

Art in the Winelands Experience

Guests are taken on a private art tour to the winelands in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. The tour starts at Grand Provence in Franschhoek where all the visual art forms are featured in the gallery. Grande Provence specialises in sculptures, making the sculpture garden and indoor sculptures a special attraction. Second on the list is La Motte where the museum offers a stimulating cultural-historical experience. The farm also features a large museum dedicated to the South Africa master, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef. Some of his works can also been in the lounge at Ellerman House. Delaire Graff is a very special location for contemporary art lovers. The collection features some of South Africa’s finest contemporary artists such as William Kentridge, Lionel Smith, Dylan Lewis and Deborah Bell. The last stop on the Art in the Winelands Experience is Tokara. The farm is the embodiment of the owner’s philosophy that good wine, good art and good food go together to make a good life. The collection of sculptures by local artists is a highlight on the property.

Everard Read showcase the finest works from abroad and around the sub-continent and plays an extremely important role in showcasing Capetonian artists. Zeitz Mocaa Pavilion is the largest contemporary art museum in Africa. The focus of this gallery is preserving, researching and exhibiting contemporary art from Africa. Stevenson Gallery is a contemporary gallery in Woodstock and often host solo as well as group exhibitions. Whatiftheworld Gallery is situated in a decommissioned synagogue in Woodstock and showcase established artists and nurture young African based artists. The Salon 91 Contemporary Art Collection specialises in affordable and accessible contemporary South African art, design and illustration. Other galleries on the list include the Barnard Gallery, Johans Borman Fine Art Gallery and Rose Korber Art.
